What to bring

Lightweight fishing clothing; breathable rain gear; high SPF sunscreen; bug spray; fast-drying footwear, a hat or cap that provides ear protection; any medications (including over-the-counter); and whatever items you find make your fishing enjoyable (see tackle section about brining your own). Pack light and use our laundry service!

Use of Credit Cards

We strongly suggest cash. ATMs may not accept your debit card and Costa Rica charges 13% on all credit charges and the Costa Rican bank charges another 5%.

Arriving at the Airport

1. As you leave the plane, follow the signs to immigration - got your passport?

2. Then to baggage claim. There are porters there taking the bags off the carousel, so you may find your bags on the side of the carousel. The porters are looking for a tip, but there are also free luggage carts.

3. If you brought an oversized or unusual shaped bag, it may be in the oversize bag area. (rod tubes, etc.)

4. Now through customs.

5. You will exit the airport and there will be an EXECUCAR driver holding a SILVER KING LODGE sign there to meet you with a private air conditioned microbus. If for any reason, you do not see someone there to meet you, please call Jose Garmendia at 506-8302-6221 or 506-2294-0004.

ATM machines

TThe ideal time to get to an ATM machine is on the way to your hotel. The EXECUCAR driver will make this happen if you tell him early. Experience has shown us that you might find it takes multiple attempts to get cash out or that the ATM will reject your card.

You should pack light when going to Silver King Lodge. We have free laundry service for your convenience. You will have a laundry bag in your room. When you are ready to have your clothes laundered, please put your bag on the hook outside of your door and when you return from fishing, your clothes will be neatly folded on your bed.

You will be taken to your hotel from the airport. - this is approximately a 1.5 hour trip for hotels in central San Jose. If you're delayed for any reason - please call Execucar/Jose Garmendia at 506-8302-6221 or 506-2294-0004 and they will call your hotel for you and make any necessary arrangements.

YYou will have the remainder of that day to enjoy the sight and sounds of San Jose. ECECUCAR can arrange that. Please make these arrangements before your arrival by e-mailing Jose at:

You are responsible for the payment of your hotel on your first night in San Jose. You are also responsible for the last night if you are not leaving on an afternoon flight.

We have a special rate available at the Sleep Inn in downtown San Jose - ask about this when booking.

Current Rates: Sleep Inn - $77.00. Rates are before Costa Rican taxes and subject to change without prior notice.

    Next day

You will be picked up at your hotel lobby at 5:30 A.M. The EXECUCAR driver will take you to the private airstrip where you will board a chartered plane for a one half hour trip to the Barra airstrip.

Please keep your passport easily accessible. You will be asked to show your passport upon entering the private airport. You may also be asked to show your passport when you disembark the plane at the Barra.

ALTERNATE: On occasion, weather makes flying impossible - or you want to see Costa Rica. We have an alternate plan - EXECUCAR will get you to the lodge. This is a 3 1/2 hour drive through San Jose, Guapolous, and Cariari to one of two ports to catch one of our boats. They call us when they reach Cariari and a Silver King boat waiting at the port. This is a scenic trip where you will see crocodiles and monkeys. It takes longer than the 35 minute flight, but we will get you there! We can also do this in reverse.

The ground transportation option is always available. Ask about it when booking.

Upon arrival to the Barra airstrip, you will be met by Silver King's host and your personal fishing guide. Then it's a quick 5 minute boat ride up the Rio Colorado to Silver King Lodge.

Upon arrival, we go to the bar for breakfast, check in and orientation while your guide takes your bag to your room. At this time, you will complete your fishing license. There is a $25.00 USD fishing license fee in Costa Rica. This license is an annual fee and expires every April 1st. If you have been fishing in Costa Rica within the year, your license will still be active.

    Tackle & Lures

YSilver King Lodge provides rods and tackle, but guests are always welcome to bring their own rods and tackle (ask for recommendations when booking).

Your guide will provide you with a fully stocked tackle with proven lures for our local fishery.

Lost lures are replaced at cost. Broken rods are replaced at cost based on circumstances.

    Tackle & Gift Shop

WWe have a fully stocked tackle shop specializing in the lures that work in the Rio del Colorado, inshore and off-shore. We even have hand-made Costa Rican crafts and Silver King Lodge apparel available.

    Fly fishing

If you want to fly fish - especially for tarpon, please bring your own tackle. Ask us for recommendations on this from our experienced guides.

We supply beer, soda and water in the boats daily for the guests. At the bar, all beer and local liquors are free, with only a $5.00 USD per drink charge for any top shelf liquor.

Massages are available by appointment. See the manager.

    Recommended Tipping (in USD)

Guides: $100.00 per day per boat.
Housekeeping staff: $8.00 per day per guest.
Kitchen staff: $12.00 per day per guest.
Bar staff: $5.00 per day per guest.

Please bring small bills, as we are limited with change. We recommend tipping your guide at the end of your trip. This information is also in the guest guide in your room, along with envelopes. Please tip the staff directly.

The day you are leaving the lodge

Please leave your key in the door and leave your bags outside your door when you go to breakfast. Your departure time is based on your flight schedule - and that of the other departing guests. Normally flights depart our airstrip around 6:30 AM.

Arriving in San Jose, you will be met by EXECUCAR service and transported to your hotel or the airport. If you are staying over and want EXECUCAR to take you to the airport, please arrange that with us at booking or directly with EXECUCAR.

    Airport exit fee

Remember, when exiting Costa Rica, there is a $29.00 USD per person exit tax. You must pay this tax inside the airport terminal BEFORE checking in with your airline.

There are counters on the right and left, just as you enter the airport terminal. These lines look long, but will move quickly.

They accept cash or credit cards - but your card might not work!. You will be given a stamped receipt, this will be passed in at a small desk on the way to checking in at your airline.

We hope you have a fantastic and successful fishing experience at Silver King Lodge. Thank you for visiting us and we hope to see you again soon.
